Satsop Abandoned Nuclear Plant - 2013

HDR of one of the cooling towers.

I don't think the word "massive" does it justice. They are freaking huge! I felt very small standing at the base of these things.

Yeah, so awesome

Not sure why they couldn't get additional funding to finish. Would think the plant would pay for itself after some time.

Environmental politics, my friend. Evil nuclear reactors out, sustainable energy in. Then they tore out the hydroelectric plants.... There never was enough funds to begin with.

I can see that. They ran out of money not long after the 3 mile island incident.

Hydro power is dangerous too. I recall reading about a dam breaking in China and millions being killed and thousands more displaced. Chernobyl, Simcity and this recent incident in Japan certainly isn't helping matters either. Many countries in Europe are using nuclear power and they're still here

Thanks!

Would you rather climb the haiku stairs or these stairs? ;-)

Been by that many times (from construction to in use to abandoned) but never bothered to stop. Now I wish I had. Great shot!

Thanks! I'm really happy how it turned out. Was racing rain so I didn't have too many shots. Definitely will head back with sunny weather!

Hope you're having a good week btw!

I'll have to stop there next time I'm on my way to Ocean Shores.

The week was just that...a week long. It is supposed to sunny and in the low 50's this weekend so I happy about that.

Satsop is about half way between Olympia and Aberdeen on your way to Ocean Shores. I don’t remember the name of the highway.

omg - this is the infamous "whoops" plant. The largest municipal bond default in american history. I need to go there!

Yup! That’s it (along with the one at Hanford).

Proudly brought to you by the Washington Public Power Supply System. I think that was the model for Enron and Arthur Anderson. Actually there are 2 cooling towers of the same size on that site for the 2 reactors.

Elma, WA...take highway 8 to Elma and follow the signs for the Satsop Business Park. Can see the towers from the highway too.
